As we celebrate Mandela Month, we are reminded of the profound wisdom of Nelson Mandela: “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” This powerful message underscores the importance of choice in achieving true freedom.

During this month, we honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy of fighting for freedom. He taught us that real freedom lies in the power of choice, which can transform lives.

At this critical time, our nation is standing at a critical juncture and all of us have the opportunity to put the power of choice into practice. We can choose to come together and provide support for those in need, or we can ignore the challenges and allow poverty to persist.

As The Gryphon Foundation, we witness the hardships faced by our unemployed candidates. Many are doing their best to get by with very little, trying to support their families on a household income of less than R1000 a month. The struggle of our candidates is a stark reminder of the importance of collective action.

Mandela Day encourages us to dedicate 67 minutes to acts of kindness, reflecting the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice. But why stop at 67 minutes? Let us extend this spirit of generosity to a lifetime!
